GOAT CONSOLE:

Gameboy Advance SP

My first SP I pre-ordered on its inital release, which was several years later stolen during a break-in. In 2020 I replaced it with this lovely SP from a modder on reddit. I was seeking a screen upgrade, semi-transparent color shell, and fresh batteries. This one had everything I wanted:

GBA SP

The most striking new part in this GBA SP is its modern and bright IPS blacklite screen. Most SPs shipped with front light LCDs that were brilliant in 2002. Today my SP's beautiful pixel art benefits from better display tech...most of the time. An exception seems to be the beginning of my favorite JRPG, Golden Sun. These scenes meant to be a dark and stormy grey: Illumination shows the actual colors are bright green.

My SP also has three total batteries, one expected in the battery compartment, but also two others daisy chained behind it's screen. I've looked at many custom modded GBAs in the community, this is the only Gameboy with many batteries I know of. Although GBA's charging port is proprietary, it hardly ever needs to plug in. In spite of increased power draw from both screen and flash cart, the batteries run at least 8 hrs under stress test. It can last more than 14 with realistic use.

Gameboy Advance is my favorite console platform ever. I recommend Who Are You?: Nintendo's Game Boy Advance Platform by Alex Custodio which analyses the GBA as an assemblage.
